COUNCIL ACCEPTS AID FROM BUSINESSMEN
MAYOR DISSENTS United I*.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright CHICAGO, Tuesday. With. 40,122 public employees awaiting their unpaid salaries the Chicago City Council has capitulated to the ultimatum from Mr. Silas Strawn’s Citizens’ Rescue Committee. They are backed by more than 50,000,000 dollars, and will advance the money needed through the purchase of tax anticipation warrants. The Mayor, Mr. W. Thompson, continues to regard Mr. Strawn’s committeemen as ‘‘fake performers,” and refuses to co-operate with the other officials, who see no other way to obtain money. Mr. Strawn made the offer on the condition that the city officials use the money economically, and in a manner acceptable to the citizens* committee.
Following the disclosures made recently by Mr. Silas Strawn regarding the financial chaos of Chicago, a group of the most wealthy citizens of Chicago, who are disturbed by comment all over the world on the seriousness of the city’s linancial plight, have agreed to raise among themselves a temporary loan to the city.
It is to bo used exclusively for the purposes of paying the employees, purchasing coal supplies for hospitals and other public institutions, and maintaining other absolutely essential services.
