MINES EXAMINED
MINISTER SATISFIED WITH EFFICIENCY
NO WAGE REDUCTIONS Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Satisfaction with the result of his examination of the State coal mines system was expressed by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, on his return to Wellington today from the West Coast. The Minister said he had carried out a thorough inspection of the plant and organisation of the James and Liverpool mines, his object being to discover whether the plant and organisation were working to the best advantage, as it was his aim to keep down costs of production without in any way reducing wages. • There is no idea of reducing wages.” said the Minister, “but it is desirable that costs of production should be kept down as low as possible, by maintaining an economic plant and a first-class organisation. As the result of going over the whole system and spending considerable time in examining it. 1 have come to the conclusion that the plant and organisation of the mines are very much better than I expected to find them. “Although there are some changes that will be made, nothing comprehensive is contemplated or necessary.”
