G. BRIDSON AGAIN

ANNEXES ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP

LAST EVENING’S CARNIVAL Swimming unopposed, G. Bridson won the quarter-mile championship of Auckland at last; evening’s meeting at the Tepid Baths. Bridson’s time was only 4 1-ssec more than his own New Zea.and record. The carnival was arranged by the Grammar and Ponsonby Swimming Clubs. It was given poor support by tho public, less people than at any other of this season’s fixtures being present. As regards competitors, however, the clubs had nothing to complain of. The 66 2-3yds open handicap drew as many as 54 entrants and all the other events were well supported except the tug-of-war which could not be held.

It was unfortunate that D. P. Lindsay was not swimming in the 440yds championship. His presence might not have affected the result, but it would certainly have improved the time. Bridson took the race even more quietly than usual, and yet was very close to tho record. Seven heats were necessary for the open handicap and a spirited final saw G. Leask, of AVaitemata, go down by a. yard and a-ha If to Grammar’s R. Thomas. In the women’s handicap Miss Coutts, giving away Ssec, won her heat with ridiculous ease and had a great tussle with Miss J. Roberts in the final. They dead-heated.

T. H. Caughey, all-sports’ champion 'of King’s College, left the novice class with a bump. He must have been handicapped by someone who did not see him win his school titles lest year.

The best race of the evening was the final of tho 220yds breaststroke handicap. A. Clarke, veteran, and Jean Thomson started on the limit. Clarke drew ahead, keeping his distance fairly well from the backmarkers. Miss Thomson dropped back to syds behind Clarke. The back men withdrew in the second last lap. Miss Thomson spurted hard in a great finish and won by the lightest of touches.
