THEFT OF PREMIUMS
REPORT TO BE OBTAINED
A report from the probation officer on the conduct of Thomas Leonard Williams, the insurance canvasser, ■who was convicted yesterday of failure to account for premiums he received, is to be obtained by Mr. Justice Herdman before sentencing the prisoner. Mr. Guy, who defended Williams today, made a strong plea for lenient treatment of the prisoner. Counsel referred to the unhappy marriage contracted by Williams some years ago and of his subsequent association with a Maori woman, with whom he was now living. Williams's wife died some time ago, and this preyed ou the prisoner’s mind to some extent, causing him to give way to bouts of drinking. •'lt is a pity that prisoner did not have any opportunity other than in the Court, of giving an explanation,” said counsel. He pointed out that the officer in charge of the T. and G. Insurance Company was an ex-constable, and the outside representative an exdetective, who made it a police case immediately.
