APATHETIC RATEPAYERS

DUNEDIN WATER SUPPLY POLL i Press Association DUNEDIN. Tuesday. The apathy shown by large numbers of ratepayers toward matters closely affecting their interests and well-being is frequently a subject for criticism by local authorities. The latest example of this lack of interest was shown in a poll conducted today in connection with a proposed loan of £40,000 to provide an extra supply main from the Sullivan dam to the Beta Street reservoir. Out of 20,590 ratepayers eligible to vote the total votes cast amounted to 1,583, or about 7.7 per cent, of the total voting strength of the city. Of these votes, SS9 were cast for and 683 against the loan, while 11 informal votes were recorded. The loan was thus carried by a majority of 206 votes.
