INCREASE OF |d NEXT YEAR From Our Own Correspondent NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. Estimates providing for an increase in rates for next year of' £d in the pound were considered at Monday evening’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council. The increase will bring the total rate from Bad to 9d in the pound. The Mayor, Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, said the estimates were based upon a decrease in the general rate of approximately id in the pound, but the total rate would be 9d owing to the losses of the tramways department. The deficit on the operations of the trams for the year ended March 31, 1930, was estimated to be £7,569. In spit© of the fact that £4,334 was collected by way of rate for the current year, the net deficit was estimated to be £4,328. To meet the position it was proposed to collect a rate which would produce £7,758 and leave a ♦credit balance of £lO.
