HAMILTON NEWS

The tender of Messrs. Hargreaves, Stapleton and Rolfe, of Hamilton, has been accepted for the construction in brick and concrete of a new classrooms block at Southwell Boys’ School. Work on the building has already commenced, and it is expected to be ready for occupation in a few weeks. Part of the block will be used as a science laboratory and part as workshops for manual classes. The building will have a tiled roof, and will be a notable addition to the school.

The section of the Great South Road between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia has for some time been recognised as the worst part of the 82 miles from Hamilton to Auckland. At the meeting of the Hamilton agency of the Auckland Automobile Association on Monday evening it was stated that the Waipa County Council had applied to the Loans Board for sanction to take a poll on the proposal to raise a loan for the permanent reconstruction of the stretch in bitumen. Members commented briefly on the shocking state of the road and agreed that nothing could be done pending the completion of negotiations.

The largest enrolment on record took place when the Hamilton High School opened for the first term yesterday. Last year the school roll stood at 430, but up to yesterday morning Mr. E. Wilson, the principal, had nearly 500 names entered. As a result accommodation will be taxed to the utmost, and additions to the staff will be probable. It was hoped to have started the new term with classes formed for wood and metalwork and engineering, but the Board of Governors has not yet heard whether the Education Department will sanction new buildings for purpose. The old staff has returned with the exception of Miss Scott, who has been replaced by Miss Barrow clough, M.A.

One of the conditions under which the: Main Highways Board is offering financial assistance to the Waikato County Council in the bituminising of the Ohinewai-Huntly section of the Great South Road is that work must be done by contract. The County Council is dissatisfied with this stipulation. because it has its own labour and plant on the spot, and has successfully performed other bitumen work on the main south highway. At the meeting of the Hamilton agency of the Auckland Automobile Association on Monday evening, a committee was appointed to confer with county and Highways Board officials, with the object of having the work expedited.
