TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS

MT. EDEN TO THREE KINGS FURTHER LOAN PROPOSALS A poll of ratepayers in the Mount Roskill. district on August 31 last, on the question of paving Three Kings Road with concrete, was rejected by the narrow margin of 75 votes, but the road board intends to submit a further proposal for authority to raise the necessary loan of approximately £20.000. The Transport Board, in a letter to the Mount Roskill Road Board, read at the board’s meeting last evening, announced that it was preparing plans for the construction of a tramway between the present terminus at. Mount Eden and the Mount Albert Road, via the Three Kings Road. Mr. A. E. Ford, however, went on to say that when this extension was first proposed it was understood that the road board intended to construct concrete carriageways along Three Kings Road, and before the Transport Board proceeded further he would be glad to know when the concrete paving was to be laid so that the sequence of the programme of works could be arranged. • In this connection, the road board's engineer reported that as the result of negotiations with the Transport Board’s engineer it was agreed that the latter should proceed with the necessary surveys of Three Kings Road and submit plans of the permanent levels he desired. A recommendation of the Works Commitee was adopted last evening that the permanent paving of Three Kings Road be again considered by the board and that the engineer be instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of the work. The clerk to the board was also instructed to take the necessary steps to have the loan proposal again placed before the ratepayers. The chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. E. A. Pearce, pointed out that if the board did not immediately prepare this road for the trams it was problematical whether the Transport Board would ever again consider the route and the trams would permanently stop at Boundary Road. If, however, steps were taken at once, there was every probability of the line being commenced as soon as the Rernuera extension was completed. This opinion -was confirmed by Mr. G. E. Tansley and the board’s engineer, Mr. John Dawson
