MT. ALBERT ROAD

HIGHWAYS BOARD’S PROPOSAL ROSKILL NOT IMPRESSED The question of the control of Mount Albert Road came before the Mount Roskill Road Board at its meeting last evening, when a communication was received from the chairman of the Main Highways Board. The present position is that the road, being the boundary between the Mount. Albert Borough and the Mount Roskill Road Board, the northern side is controlled by the former authority and the southern side by Mount Roskill. The Mount Albert Council having paved its half of the road with concrete, objects to the whole of the traffic using the concrete and avoiding the road board’s scoria surface, and it has requested the Highways Board to contribute toward the upkeep of the council’s half. The Highways Board now suggests that the present position can be overcome only by altering the boundary of the borough, so that the whole of the boundary road would be in the Roskill district. If such an alteration to boundaries were made, the Highways Board would then be in a position to contribute. Mr. Furkert further intimated that similar boundary adjustments had been made quite recently at Hastings and Masterton. The road board, however, decided to take no further action, the chairman. Mr. E. F. Jones, remarking that the letter settled the question as to Roskill contributing toward the upkeep of the road, while other members feared that in the event of the control of the whole road being turned over to Roskill, the payment of the interest and sinking fund on the concreting loan would probably follow the transfer.
