RACE RESULTS

HOW 2YA GETS THEM -the reports o£ the race meetings at frentham put on the air by station 2YA are secured by a sporting representative in Wellington for various overseas journals, who desires his identity to be kept secret. He checks up the starters, scratchings, and results on the course, and then proceeds to a telephone, the location of which is not disclosed, and thus the news is put on the air. The particulars are telephoned to the 2YA station, written down, and announced by the announcer at ’YA. SOUND FREQUENCIES Although the human ear Is probably the most sensitive receiver of air vibrations in existence it nevertheless has limitations, so that the average person is only capable of registering air vibrations, from approximately 16 to 10,000 cycles a second. Any note that vibrates at a frequency below or above this range is therefore inaudible. It is then readily apparent that in order to reproduce a facsimilie of the sounds emitted by artists performing from a broadcast, it is necessary that: (1) The broadcast station convey to the air the whole of the frequencies produced in this range by the artists’ actual performance. 12) The receiving apparatus is capable of detecting and amplifying in exact proportion, each of these frequencies at their relative strengths. 1 1) The loud-speaker reproduce these electrical amplifications faithfully throughout the same audible band. Under these conditions and only these, can natural recreation be obtained.
