Auckland Horses Have Fine Chances This Week

Prospects for the Taranaki Fixture

TWO years ago Takauini trainer «J. T. Jamieson was unlucky to have Eden Hall beaten in the Taranaki Cup. Will he be more fortunate in tomorrow’s big contest with In the Shade, who ran his best race since the New Zealand Cup at Takapuna a week ago ’ However, Aucklanders will be more prone to fancy Ctirinax or Pegawav. particularly the former, who was so narrowly beaten at Takapuna by Prodice.

A strong contingent of Auckland horses will be among the contestants at the Taranaki meeting to be held at New Plymouth tomorrow and on Saturday. Fields all round are perhaps stronger than usual, and the fixture promises to be one of the best in the history of the club. The Taranaki Cup contest should be d memorable one, for the quality of the field is high. The course is a turning one, however, and a good position over the last half mile is more necessary here than on most courses. A start is to be made with the Waitara Hurdles This field is up to the average on this circuit. although Royal Acre appears to dominate the situation, despite his weight. lie is a splendid jumper, one that failed rather unaccountably during the holiday meetings, and he can do much better. Vivo is one that does not run two races alike, and so is Panorama. Jen has come

a long way for this fixture, so apparently he is thought a good deal of. Vinella is a likely improver, and so are Borsalene and Airforce. Whenuanui, Whisogne and Joke Form complete the field. Best backed may be ROYAL ACRE JEN VINELLA Ngam'otu Juvenile Handicap This event is restricted to two and tliree-year-olds, and there are a few speedy customers engaged. Acora is brilliant, and should be able to account for Valpre. Blue Paper and Royal Finance are two others that have lots of pace, and Rose Lupin shows distinct promise. Hard Words won a double at Takapuna after racing consistently at Trentham, and despite his rehandicap he must be hard to beat. On the other side of the handicap arc a lot of unknowns, the best of whom may be I’m Alone and Foot Rule. It should be a good race, with the barrier positions a vital factor. Favourites may be HARD WO RES ACORA BLUE PAPER Flying Handicap It is a classy field that is paid up for in the sprint, headed by Paganelli, whose real mission is the classic on the second day. If produced here he will be hard to beat. Cimabue is on the up grade, and Silvermine is n possibility. Benzora has done nothing for some time, and Eaglet promises

to be all the better for her outing at Takapuna last week, when she went under to a good one in Valuation. Lady Quex has been raised for her ridiculously easy win at Takapuna, but a repetition of that form will make her almost invincible. Leitrim and Ridgemount will go fast, and Melissa may be the pick of the trio at the bottom. Most money may be forthcoming in support of LADY QUEX PAGANELLI EAGLET Moturoa Electric Hack The unknowns in this affair are numerous. Something is known of Corwen. Rillet, Arakuku. Coalbag, Perennis, Rossferry, Cyrille, Royal Visitor, Espion and Peg Black. In demand may be RILLET PERENNIS PEG BLACK

THE ACCEPTANCES

Taranaki Cup Heading this list is Pegaway, a master of weight and one likely to | be very much in the picture. Bright Glow is now at her best and will be a formidable proposition for the others. Vertigern too showed up at Trentham, but even yet he does not appear to be up to his form of the spring, or of last year. Corinax registered a rattling performance in the Takapuna Cup. leading all the way only to be narrowly touched off in the straight by Prodice. With 31b less tomorrow Corinax is going to be right in the picture, for he has early speed. In the Shade may be beater by the turning course, and Piutliair will have to do her best. Yoma is not getting any younger, but Shrewd is a possibility, for he ran a couple of good races at Trentham. Lucy Rose may he bothered by tlie journey, and none of the others are particularly fancied, although the best of them may be Kawliakina and Marjoram. In a big pool three that should have most friends are CORINAX BRIGHT GLOW PEGAWAY Okato Hack Handicap Quite a useful field of hacks is likely to be in evidence here. Dolomite, who heads the list, has not shown form since he won at the Cup meeting at Riccarton, but he is one liable to bob up at any time, for he is good. Grecian is an improver, and farther down we have Calamine, Democratic. Singer, Joy Spear, Green Acre and Latakia. It is an even field, and there should be money for GRECIAN SINGER DEMOCRATIC N > Mimi High-Weight Handicap The three furlong straight run alonn the back is of material assistance in giving the horses time to find their feet. The Swell, Manly, Callanmore, Marjoram, Red. Fuchsia. Hop wood, Tenacre and Flying.shot all have pace, but the fancies may be MARJORAM HOPWOOD THE SWELL Timaru Hack Handicap Havaspot is to be given a chance to account, for his two failures at Takapuna, and in his case one would prefer a dry track. He looks the goods in this small and moderatefield. The Warden is good when thoroughly tuned up, and of course To Hoia shows a lot of promise. Anbridge and Joy Germ may be best of the others. THIRTY FOR NEW PLYMOUTH The outside of the course proper was available for fast work at Hawera en Saturday morning, and, despite the showery weather, was in first-class order for gallops. Benzora went off a bit stiltily, but after a couple of furlongs ran the last part of his work in good shape. He was not sent against the watch. Awaken ran five furlongs comfortably in 1.11. Silvermine and Llanore galloped on Friday morning, going five furlongs on the plough in 1.4, but neither displayed the customary dash usually characteristic of their track work. Next morning both were relegated to pace work. Tenacre worked well over a round, running home his last half-mile in 54£. Orby's choice sprinted three furlongs in 39 1-5. Royal Acre is particularly well just now, and showed to advantage over Joy Spear in a gallop over a milerur. in 1.54, after running the first half in 54. Ross Ferry, Golden Flower and Mount Shannon did p ice work on the middle of the oval. Arakuku went better and finished on even terms with Bon Eve, the latter also showing improved form In a work-out over five furlongs in 1.7 l-*>-J. Fryer had a big string out, most being relegated to half and three-quar-ter-pace workBright Glow was exercised on the lead with Vivo. Banbridge, Orazone, Paitonu, Gowan Lea, Anbridge, Copey and Just So were the members of Fryer’s team to do routine work. Coalbag, Fortalice and The Warden were companions in a gallop over seven furlongs from the barrier post?. The trio were well together for the first half-mile, run in 53. Fortalice and The Warden finished four lengths in front of Coalbag in 1.35. Green Linnet scampered over_ three furlongs in great style in 37 1-5. Tareka was given a round of the sand track, her respiratory trouble;* being more pronounced than usual. A’alpre finished in front of Kilting over five furlongs in 1.7. Just on thirty horses from Hawera are booked to compete at New Flymouth next week. Latakia and Paitonu ran a smart ' seven furlongs on Friday morning © n i the plough, covering the distance * n j 1.31, with Latakia a shade in front.
