THEFT OF COAT
MAN SENT TO GAOL From Our Oicn Correspondent WHANGAREI, Tuesday. In the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court toda.y before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., Frank Charles Ashman, Herbert Gordon Lewis and a woman, whose name was ordered to be suppressed were charged with the theft on February 3 of three pairs of shoes, a tableknife, a pair of nut-crackers, and a sports coat. The charge of stealing several other articles, against the woman, was withdrawn by the police. The three accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said * the woman was employed at a local hotel and she put the clothes mentioned into a bag. They were taken by Lewis and later sold lo a second-hand dealer for 14s. Ashman had sold the goods and was drinking on the proceeds when he was arrested. The senior-ser-geant considered that Ashman was the ringleader. Nothing was known against Lewis. Ashman was sentenced to one month's hard labour for stealing the coat, and convicted and discharged on the other charge. Lewis was fined £3 and ordered to make restitution of 3 4s, and the woman’s case was adjourned for six months.
