HIGHEST FOR SEVEN YEARS Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The total of unemployed in England on January 27 was 1,491,500, which was 15,098 more than the week before, and 97,422 more than at this time last year. The Unemployment Grants Committee has approved relief schemes totalling £1,808,000, and employing approximately 5,000 men. Schemes submitted totalled 1,004, costing £19,000,000. On the motion for the third reading of the Consolidated Fund Bill in the House of Commons, Sir Arthur SteelMaitland, Conservative member for Tamworth, raised the unemployment problem. He said the number of people out of work now was higheT than at any period for seven years and nearly 50,000 more than last year.
