RICH PRIZES

FOR OHINEMURI FIXTURE MEETING ON MARCH 15 AND 17j The programme drawn up by the j Ohinemuri Jockey Club for ’its an- j nual meeting on Saturday and Mon- j day, March 15 and 17, is such as to compare favourably with those ] staged by some outside metropoli- | tan bodies. i On the opening 1 clay the stake money j i soars to £2,000 (averaging £250 for | each of eight races), and for the sec- | ond day the prizes amount to £ 1,800, | making a total for the fixture of ] £3,500. Small wonder that owners j have something to 1001-c forward to at | Paeroa next month. | The course at Paeroa is rather unusual in its conformation, but it suits the horses, their owners and the spectators alike. There is a fine long straight for the good horses to make | their presence felt. Last year Royal | Doulton won the cup after being last at the bottom of the straight, defeating a very useful field. The viewpoint for spectators is admirable, the sloping hillside and embankment affording an excellent view of the horses running almost at the feet of the spectators. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club is the only one in the province to cater for hurdlers and steeplechasers out of the winter season, and it can be said that the jumpi ing season really starts with the Paeroa fixture. Last year the fields in the steeplechases were large and furnished exciting contests. The £6OO Cup The leading item on the bill of fare is of course the Ohinemuri Cup, which carries with it stake money to the extent of £6OO, of which £450 goes to the winner, second and third receiving £IOO and £SO respectively, thus making it a race well worth winning. The distance is a mile and three furlongs, so that the race itself presents a rare opportunity for the stayers and purely middle distance horses. The second leg is the St. Patrick’s Handicap, of £3OO, of which the winner takes £225. This is run over the customary six furlong course. These two leading events should draw the best handicap horses. The two-year-olds are catered for by the Karangahake Handicap, and the jumpers by the Handicap Hurdles and McGuire Memorial Steeplechase. The double event on the second day (Monday, St. Patrick’s Lay) is the Shaw Memorial Handicap, of £ 350 (place money being £250, £75 and £25), 8f- furlongs, and the Paeroa Handicap, of £250, six furlongs (first three horses to receive £IBO, £45 and £25 respectively). Cup for Hacks One of the most interesting items on the second day’s card, and one that should succeed in bringing together all the best hacks in the province, is the Hikutaia Hack Cup. of £275, 8?s furlongs. The winner is to receive £175 and a silver cup valued at £25, second and third horses taking £SO and £25 respectively. It is one of the most richly endowed hack races in the province and should prove a good draw for the second day. Entries for all events close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. February 26. Mr. McMancmin’s first day’s handicaps are duo on Monday, March 10, and acceptances are due at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. Nominations and acceptances may be made with either the secretary. Mr. IT.
