BOAT STRIKES SNAG
FAMILY HAS DUCKING IN RIVER BROUGHT ASHORE BY ROPE Press Association PALMERSTON N., Today. Ml'. T. Downing and his wife and three children, aged 16, nine and five, had a narrow escape from drowning in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon. They were rowing in a flat-bottomed boat When one of the oars broke. The boat drifted on to a submerged snag, and filled rapidly, forcing the occupants to scramble on to the snag. They were finally rescued by means Of a rope and raft. Mrs. Downing was in the water two hours before being safely landed on the bank.
