CAUGHT IN UNDERTOW
MARRIED MAN DROWNED TRAGEDY IN SOUTH ISLAND Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Today. While trawling on the Waimiri Beach, a few miles north of New Brighton, on Saturday afternoon, two men, A. W. Williamson and Frank Hall, -who were on the shallow end of the line, slipped into a deep channel in which a heavy current was running. Both were heavily clothed and, though Mr. Hector Philpott, another member of the party, went ia to help, Mr. Williamson was carried out and drowned. Members of the Waimairi Surf Club ran a line out, but were unable to find the body, although they searched for some time. Half an hour later, however, his body was seen floating cn top of a roller and, with the help of the line, was brought to the beach. A doctor -was called and attempts at resuscitation were made. For more than an hour everything possible was done, but without avail. Mr. Williamson lived on North Beach. He was a married man with three children.
