Records At Forbury
WHITE SATIN AND WRACKEEN Trotting Fixture Ends AUCKLAND BRACKET SUCCESSFUL Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Saturday. IN excellent weather, before a very large attendance, and on a tracl-c that was in gxeat order, and afforded every facility for speed tests, the summer carnival of the Forbury Park Trotting Club reached finality today. Performances of exceptional merit were registered by White Satin and Wrackeen, who established records.
White Satin, a three-year-old filly by Wrack from Pearl. Pointer, recently purchased by the Auckland sportsman, Mr. George McMillan, not only won the Waverley Handicap, but in tramping tho 12 furlongs in 3.35 3-5, she created a record for trotters of her age. Two races later, another Wrack representative, Wrackeen, a four-year-old mare from Pansy, caused a stir by pacing a mile and a-half in 3.21 4-5, a record for the track. The previous best time at Forbury for this journey was held by the brilliant young pacer Oil worth, who last May registered 3.24 1-5. The principal event of the day was won by Sunshower, who was followed home by her stable companion Jean McElwyn, who added another second to her long list. All Peters annexed the two-mile trot from the favourite, Writer, and in view of recent good form the winner was allowed to pay a false price. Shady Spot, after being third in Wrackeen’s race, was a tall order in the Royal Handicap, and Hooper’s pacer won nicely. Great Hogan, Rita McKinney and John Noble were surprise packets, paying fine figures. In
the case of John Noble, his party were asked to explain the improved form shown, but were able to satisfy the powers that all was in order. Driver Calder was fined £5 for flourishing his whip in the straight. That speculation was brisk is shown by the totalisator returns. The machine handled £37,829 for the day, against £32,923 for the second day last year. For the fixture £62,189 was registered compared with £54,512 in 1929, an increase of £7,677. Whit® Satin's Record White Satin was elected a hot favourite for the Waverley Handicap, and quite justified the confidence of backers in beating Fifa by a length, and, incidentally, establishing a fresh mile and a-half .record for three-year-old trotters of 3.53 3-5. White satin must bo regarded as the champion of her years, for she was slow away, and then beat Fifa decisively. Fifa was not disgraced, as she registered only a fifth of a second worse than the winner. The others were well beaten. Robert Todd, who filled third place, broke several times, as did Garienella when holding a leading position. Ambition trotted the best race outside of the dividend-payers. Body Blow to Backers
Cushla D’Oi £1,204, Erin’s Fortune £963, and Krina £647 were bestbacked in the Telegraph Handicap, rhe favourite broke after about two furlongs had been covered, and Krina. md Bing Boy lost their chances at t ie start. Marinca led all the way to the straight, where Rita McKinney came through to win easily by three lengths. Erin’s Fortune was four lengths away third, followed by Sunchild and Krina. The result was a body blov,’- for puntAnother Record Wrackeen established a track record for tho mile and a-half of 3.21 4-5 when she bea: Wild Nita and Shady .Spot by a narrow' margin in the Gore Handicap. It was a great race all
the way, but had Shady Spot got out sooner she would almost certainly have won. Morning Sun made up his handicap rather soon, and faded away after being second to Lily Harold the latter ]ed into the straight. Blue Glen and Kinney Dillon were found out before the lane was entered, and Cushla d’Or, who started m the mile saddle just previously, was counted out when racing prominently at the far turn. Haydock stood on the mark. Auckland Owner* Success Mr. D. R. Revell’s good mares. Sunshower and Jean McElwyn, had the finish of the Metropolitan Handicap to themselves. Sunshower led all through, and never looked like being beaten. She accomplished the first mile in 2.17, where she had as her nearest attendants Talent, Athalone, Jenn McElwyn, Bonny Logan, LinkrnguU and King Pointer. When she
reached the mile and a-half in 3.23 1-5, Roi l’Or and Athalone had come on the scene with fast runs, but when the back stretch was reached the leader drew away again, and at the far turn was three lengths clear of Athalone and Jean McElwyn. Berry had no occasion to draw the whip on Sunshower, and she went on to beat Jean McElwyn by two and a-half lengths. Athalone was beaten by half a length for third, and then came Bonny Logan, King Pointer, and Roi l’Or. Sunshower proved herself a great stayer, as she ran the last mile and a-half in 3.20 1-5, the last mile in 2.11, the half-mile in 1.5 3-5, and the last quarter in 34 2-5. Jean McElwyn added to her list of second placings. Athalone, good stayer that he has proved himself, quite faded to go on as expected in the home stretch, and Talent was beaten at ths halfmile. Roi l’Or was required to cover such a lot of ground that he called enough with two frlongs to go. Bonny Logan ran a surprisingly good race, being easily the best of the unplaced division. Maiwhariti broke badly twice during the race. Billy Sea was outclassed, while Glideaway and Linkman never looked dangerous, and Daphne d Oro found the opposition too good at the terms. A Big Outsider John Noble, a big outsider, drew right away from the field two furlongs from home in the Stewards’ Handicap and although challenged strongly by Lydia in the straight, lie held his own under pressure, to win by over a length. Le Thorpe finished fast, one and a-half lengths away, and Russell Pointer did best of the others. St. Geoirge, the favourite, lost too much ground at the start, and Millie De Oro refused to settle down until more than a furlong had been covered. All PeLsrs Scores The two-mile trotters’ race provided a great contest. All Peters allowed Commander Bingen to make most of the pace, and when asked for his effort he came away to score comfortably by a length. Writer’s performance was outstanding, as he stood All Peters up seven seconds in the last half-mile, and in going his last half at a 2.12 gait, he got up to beat Commander Bingen by a length on the post. He went away slowly or he would have been hard to beat. Bonny Spec did best of the tired lot, and came in after Commander Bingen. Backers on the Job Shady Spot; wound up an odds on favourite for the Royal Handicap, which produced a six-horse field. Shady Spot allowed Mac De Oro to pace her for a mile, when she took the lead, and was never afterwards off the bit, to win by close on two lengths from Nelson McElwyn, with Liberal one and a-half lengths away third. Erin's Fortune broke at the start and again during the running, which made her fourth at the end of a meritorious effort. Shady Spot won like a high-grade pacer for O. E. Hooper. She is a six-year-old. by Sungod—Hallmark and hails from Southland. Hooper Scores Again Arikitoa ended up a hot favourite for the Au Revoir Handicap. He tried to get away on the fly, but broke and lost a lot of ground. Great Logan led Logan Hanlon, Hector’s Own, Talent and Lady Cello past the stand
the first time Talent ran up to Great Logan at the home bend, but the latter hung on to win by a neck. Athalone was half a length away third, and then came Hector’s Own, with Arikitoa at the head of a bunch. Great Logan showed a marked reversal of form on the first day's running, and it was surprising that no action was taken.
