Royal Doulton In A Stirring Finish
Good Sport at Takapuna Final
AS expected, Royal Doulton was better suited by the distance of the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap on Saturday, and she won well after a stirring tussle, in which she stuck to her task with rare gameness, heads only separating the first four horses to pass the post.
Rain set in at about 8 o’clock on « Saturday morning, and continued right up to the first race, and a little afterward, and so bad was the outlook that there was talk of a postponement. However, it was decided to go on with the second day’s racing of the summer meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club. The weather was quite fine, from the second race onward, and there was a large crowd by the time the third event came up for decision. The course was a bit soft at the outset. but it dried up quickly. There was some excellent racing, and with well-backed winners generally turning up, the day’s sport would be appreciated by the majority. Mild surprises were sprung by Prince of Orange in the Wynyard Plate, and Haviland in the Rangitoto Hack, but generally the results were pretty accurately forecast by backers. Apprentice Suspended There was a good deal of interference in the Rangitoto Hack. with bumping at various stages of the contest. An inquiry was held, and A. Parsons, rider of the horse that finished second. Nassock, was suspended for a fortnight for careless riding soon after the start of the race. The meeting was excellently conducted, as is to be expected at gatherings of the Takapuna Club, and this popular sporting body was distinctly unfortunate in that the rain came at such an inopportune time. The totalisator handled £42,150, against £57,171 on the second day last year (which was Anniversary Day), a decrease of £15,021. For the two days the amount invested was £87,764, compared with £98,875, the total decrease for the two days being £ll,lll. Moana Handicap IToniton, £616, the Chromadyne— Lady Eustace bracket, £392, and New Boy, £336, were prime fancies for the Moana Handicap. On Top swerved when the tapes were released and got badly left. Measurer, on the rails, began best, followed by Royal Lover, Biddy Comet, Chromadyne, New Boy, Aggressive and Honiton, but at the end of three furlongs Chromadyne, Biddy Comet and Royal Dover were together in fropt of Honiton, Red Lion and New Boy, who were close up. j while On Top had made a fast [ run round the field to he handy, i The favourite moved up approaching ! the straight and turned for home on turns with Chromadyne and Biddy Comet, with Loving Cup, Sir Mond and Royal Lover handy. In the run to the judge Ploniton did best to win by half a length from Chromadyne, who was a similar distance in front of Loving Cup. Biddy Comet was fourth and then came Royal Lover, Sir Mond. Ruapatu, Aggressive, Measurer and New Boy. Waiwera High-weight King's Guard £1,220 was a good favourite over Glena Bay £769 for the High-weight Handicap, with Cybele supported to the extent of £473. Salamander led out from Cybele, Quincoma and King’s Guard, and passing the stand the quartet was followed by Mashoor, Wenday, Golden Wedding and Glena Bay. Along the back there was little separating Quincoma and King's Guard at the head of affairs. with Glena Bay, Cybele and Mashoor close up. The favourite was first to turn for home, followed by Quincoma, Cybele, Glena Bay, Mashoor and Wenday, and finishing strongly King’s Guard won by one and a-half lengths from Cybele, with Wenday, who put in a fin© run, two lengths back third. Next to arrive were Mashoor, Quincoma, Glena Bay and Golden Wedding, with Salamander tailed off. Wynyard Plate ITavaspot £1,570 was looked upon i as unbeatable for the Wynyard Plate, ! the next best backed being Tuku £902. I The public was astray, however, the i dividend-payers being Prince of Orange i £427 and Volimond £432., Awamutu : hopped out fast and led from Currat jong, Carl Idem, Volimond, Tuku, Arikitoa, Crimestor and Havaspot, but as the five furlong post was reached, Tuku and Havaspot were in behind the leader Awamutu, the" two being followed by Currajong, Carl Idem, Volimond, Crimestor, Arikitoa, Helium, Joy Girl and Prince of Orange. The last named and Volimond went up fast making for the straight and were with Awamutu and Havaspot as the turn was negotiated, Currajong, Helium, Crimestor and Arikitoa also being in the picture. In the run home Prince of Orange finished strongly to win nicely by two lengths from Volimond, with Helium one and a-half lengths back third. Carl Idem was fourth and then followed Currajong, Havaspot, Sweet Whisper, Tuku, Crimestor and Monalof. Suburban Handicap Eaglet £1,917, and Valuation £1,445, were best backed of the seven runners in the Suburban Handicap, and they fought out the issue, Valuation getting the decision. Valuation was first to break the line, followed by Branson, Eaglet, Arihana, Cynthia N.. Awarere, and Town Bird. At the half-mile post Awarere, Town Bird, and Valuation were in line, with Branson and Eaglet close up, and approaching the final bend Cynthia N. moved up fast. Valuation. Town Bird, Awarere, and Cynthia X. entered the straight in a bunch just in front of Eaglet, and although the favourite made a strong effort, she failed by a length to reach Valuation, and just topped Cynthia X. off by a neck for second place. Branson, Awarere, Arihana, and Town Bird crossed the line in that order behind the placed division. T.J.C. Handicap
There was spirited betting and a spirited finish in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap. Hyde Park, £1,227, was a slightly better favourite than Royal Doulton. £1,107, who had a small call over Prince Val, £1.090, with good support also for Maori Boy, £927. Lucy Rose was tlie early leader from Hyde Park, Monsogne. Flying Juliet, Hipo, and Le Choucas, with Royal Doulton and High Pitch last. Along the back the order was Lucy Rose, Hyde Park, Flying Juliet, Hipo, Royal Doulton. Monsogne, Le Choucas, and Prince Val, but crossing the top the favourite went to the front, and led into the straight from Royal Doulton, Prince Val, Sir Russell, Lucy Rose, Maori Boy, and High Pitch. All riders were busy on the road home, and in a stirring finish Royal Doulton prevailed by a head over Maori Boy, who was a similar distance in advance of Prince Val, with Sir Russell, who was a little unlucky, a head away fourth. Then came Hyde Park. High Pitch, Flying Juliet, Monsogne, Hipo, and Lucy Rose. Hobson Handicap The Hard Words —Smitlifield bracket, £1,432, was the elect of the two-year-old field, but there was solid support for Bells of Shandon, £1,194, Betterment. £S62, being best supported of the others. Hard Words
went out smart, and was clear of Bells of Shandon, Silene, Betterment, Full Measure, Set Fair, and Rafflight at the end of two furlongs. Hard Words was still in command as heads were turned for home, but he had not much to spare from Bells of Shandon, Set Fair. Full Measure, and Betterment. Inside the distance Bells of Shandon made his effort, but failed by a neck to overhaul Hard Words, with Set Fair two lengths back third. Full Measure was fourth, and then came Betterment, Rafflight, Trickle, and Silene. Rangitoto Hack Kaiwanga £1,150 and King’s Guard £1,077, were the prime fancies for the Rangitoto Hack, but there was a surprise in store for backers, Haviland £432 and Nassock £236 filling the places and paying good prices. Quinsilia was the early leader from Haviland. Orchus, Spring Abbey and Always, and along the back Haviland had joined Quinsilia in the lead, the pair showing the way to Orchus, Spring Abbey, Always and Dark Prince, with Xassock coming fast from the back. He continued to make up ground and at the home turn was just behind Haviland and Orchus, with Spring Abbey, Quinsilia and Luminary also going well. Nassock made a bold bid to catch Haviland, but suffered defeat by three parts of a length, with Luminary half a length away, third. King’s Guard, penalised only 41b, was fourth and then came Spring Abbey, Quinsilia, Always and Orchus, with the favourite last. Anniversary Handicap Taneriri £2,229, was a hot pot in the final event, with White Wings £ 1,654, next in demand. The favourite led out quickly from Macroom, Gemlight and Roman Pearl, but with two furlongs gone, Gray’s mount was back last. Gemlight led Respirator and Roman Pearl across the top,- but at the home turn White Wings was beside Gemlight, with Respirator, Taneriri and Roman Pearl handy. The favourite finished full of running to win by one and a-quarter lengths from Gemlight, with Roman Pearl three parts of a length away, third, followed by White Wings, Macroom and Respirator.
