Knight was much more cautious. Badcock bowled the leg theory and brought the field close in. With one wicket down for 15 against the M.C.C.’s big score of 511, Flawke’s Bay made a disastrous start when the game resumed this morning, losing five more wickets for 20 runs in half an hour’s play. Stephenson and Evans resumed batting to the bowling of Nichols and Allom. The pair were in deadly form, and had the home batsmen demoralised. At the end of half an hour’s play, Hawke’s Bay had lost six wickets for 35 runs. Evans and Beck made a stand for the seventh wicket, and 50 went up after an hour’s play. At 55 Nichols and Allom, who had two for 15 and four for 26 respectively, came off, and Wolley and Bowley went on. Pour maiden overs followed. The partnership was broken at 65, Evans being caught at silly-point after a patient IS, made in 80 minutes. Three more maiden overs followed, Nichols coming on again in place of Bowley at 70, but Legge replaced him after one over. Beck brought 90 up with two fours.
