COALMINERS SLACK
SHORTAGE OF ORDERS f rom Our Oxen Correspondent HUNTLT, Today. The coalminers in the Waikato are at present having a slack time. For the fortnight ended yesterday, the Renown Collieries worked only four days, the Taupiri Coal Company five and the Pukemiro Collieries four and a-half. The shortage of orders, owing to the season, is the chief cause of the trouble and the Railway IDepartme »rs policy in not burning Waikato coal during the summer months is a contributing factor. A meeting of the representatives of the mines affected is being held here today to discuss the position. Mr. E. George, chairman of the Huntly Town Board, is presiding, and Mr. W. LeeMartin, M.P., is also present. It is hoped to be able to obtain orders from the Government for supplies to the Railway Department, which, it is submitted, could burn Waikato coals under present exceptional weather conditions. It was unanimously decided that failing the Government not placing more orders locally that relief works be immediately opened. Mr. Lee Martin said that immediate steps would be taken to place the question before the Government.
