This has caused a r duction of over 80 per cent, of forei articles used on the railways, and the substitution of Japanese goods for them. Due to the retrenchment and business depression a decrease in the income of the Government Railways is the biggest in history. Whereas normally the annual increase is ten per cent., in recent months the loss in income has approached £20,000,000.
