MARRIED 50 YEARS

MR. AND MRS. H. B. DOBBIE’S JUBILEE WELL-KNOWN BOTANIST The 50th anniversary of their marriage was celebrated today by Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Bobbie, of 84 Market Road. Epsom. The ceremony that is being marked today was performed in St Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, the bride being Miss Charlotte A. Gllfillan daughter of the late Mr. Henry Gilfillan, of Auckland.

Bora in India, Mr. Bobbie entered the railway service on arriving in Xew Zealand in 3 875. He was employed 25 years in the department, of which he spent: 2ft years in the Whangarei district, where le manager of the lir e. He was for thre» years railway manager at PI ’ton and on relinquishing his position went to South Africa, where he was engaged for three years on railway work. A keen horticulturist and botanist. Mr. Dobbie was the first to gro Poorman oranges in the TH hangar district and realise their value. His name is also familiar as the author of "New Zealand Ferns.” Mr. Dobbie was a member and ex-chairman of the One Tree Hill Road Board.

Mr. and Mrs. Debbie have a family of six, one of whom is Madame Rene Vernon, of Tunis. who under her maiden name is well known for her work as a New Zealand artist. T ie other members of the family are: Mrs. J. A. Macneili, Mr. Hugh Dobbie and Miss Xell Dobbie, of Auckland; Miss Virginia Dobbie, of Brisbane; and Mrs. A. F. Hall, of Tauranga.
