GAOL PREFERRED
FOUND DRUNK IN CONVENT GROUNDS “NO FELONIOUS INTENT” “It would be more profitable for me to do the three days.” remarked William John Brett, electing to go to gaol when he was ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses, £1 2s 6d, at the Police Court this morning, in default three days’ imprisonment. Brett was found drunk in the grounds of St. Mary’s Convent, Ponsonby. He appeared for sentence, having been some days in gaol on remand. Mr. Koble represented accused whom he described as a thoroughly decent young man. He was a seaman, but had been out of a ship for some time. "Brett got drunk and blundered into the convent grounds without knowing where he was,” added counsel. "Quite rightly he was arrested.” Brett was convicted and discharged, being ordered to pay the expenses, in default three days’ imprisonment. He was given three days in which to find the money.
