GRAFTON GULLY LAND
COUNCIL ACQUIRES MORE PROPERTY “SHOULD BE BY GIFT” With the decision to acquire a further property in Grafton Gully, the owners having offered a little more than an acre for £350, the City Council advanced a further stage last evening in its accumulation of property in that locality for a reserve. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, was of the opinion that the council had secured a good bargain and the further purchase of adjoining properties should be carried on. Property owners in the gully were upbraided by Cr. Ellen Melville for not donating the property to the City. “Many generous people have donated, not only small pieces of land, but parks, to the City,” she affirmed. “Could the suggestion not be made to Grafton property owners?” “They have all been approached and we know what each one wants,” commented the Mayor. “They are lucky to get anything,” replied Cr. Melville. “I want to know where the money is coming from.” A Councillor: The ratepayers. The Mayor pointed out that the property which they had just decided to purchase was being acquired at a much lower figure than that originally asked by the owners. Endeavours would be made to obtain further land in t}ie gully at prices satisfactory to the council
