“WILL BE DEAD SOON”

INEBRIATES’ HOME IS ONLY HOPE WOMAN ADMITS THEFT Urging that the woman would be dead soon if she continued her present lint: of conduct, Major Annie Gordon, probation officer, recommended at the Police Coprt this morning that Kathleen Gray be sent to Pakatoa Inebriates’ Home for two years. Gray, a domestic, aged 42, was charged with the theft of a gold watch, bangle and ring valued at £lB from Gwen Riggir on January 16. She pleaded guilty and also admitted being found drunk in Grey Avenue and breaking the terms of her prohibition order. Major Gordon recommended that the woman be sent to Pakatoa. “Drink is her trouble, and she will be dead soon if she goes on like this,” the major continued. “She says she will die if she is sent to the island, but even that is better than dying on the street.” Gray was convicted and discharged on the counts of drunkenness and theft. She was sent to Pakatoa for two years on the charge of breaking the terms of her prohibition order. Gray, a feeble-looking woman, left tho dock, her head bowed.
