ORAKEI ROADS

COUNCIL ACCEPTS DEDICATION IN GOOD CONDITION On the condition that the name of Orakei was changed, the City Council agreed last evening to accept dedication, as requested by the district engineer of the Public Works Department, of stretches of road in the Orakei garden suburb. The lengths were 33 chains in Orakei Road, 14 in Orakei Crescent, 13 in Okahu Street, nine in Reihana Street, and five in Nehu Street—a total of 74 chains. Cr. A. J. Entrican advanced the suggestion that, as there was already one Orakei Road in the city an alteration should be made to the name of the new street at Orakei. It was agreed that an alteration in the name should be recommended. Cr. J. B. Paterson objected to the name of Orakei Crescent also. Though he was not sure whether the city standard had been observed in the new roads at O.rakei, Cr. W. H. Murray said the council should be sure it was so. Cr. J. Dempsey, chairman of the Works Committee, said, by the engineer’s report, it was evident that the roads were up to standard. Crs. J. R. Lundon and E. ,1. X'helan urged that the council should be careful to see the roads were in order. Mr. J. Tyler, acting-city engineer, said the roads had been constructed according to the same specification as that used by the city. The Government was giving Isa square yard for tarring and sanding, which it was hoped to do later. The roads looked rough, but that was through lack of traffic. Their use by sheep also had not improved their appearance. Remarking that the roads would carry traffic for which they had never been intended, Cr. H. P. Burton moved an amendment that the question of the conditions on which the city was prepared to accept dedication should be referred to the Works Committee, but the Mayor, Mr. O. Baildon, said he would not accept an amendment at that stage.
