Yachtsmen’s Great Dav
RESULTS OF REGATTA
Heather Cup to Heartsease
I ’ROM the point of view of contestants and spectators alike the 1930 Anniversary D;iy regatta held on the Waitemata Harbour yesterday will go on record as the most successful for many years. A steady sou’-west breeze gave the yachts sailing conditions which could not have been bettered. The big race for first-class keel yachts competing for the Heather Gup was won by Heartsease on corrected times. Second and third places were also filled by front-markers. Features which attracted wide attention were the contests for the Lip ton and Ross Cups for 14ft Jellicoe boats. Both events went to Betty, the well-known boat which won the Sanders Cup three times successively for Canterbury. Avalon (Auckland), defeated Betty in the first event, but was disqualified for hitting a mark. Colleen, Canterbury's Sanders Cup challenger, notched second place in both events.
The Regatta Committee, headed by its chairman, Mr. E. E. Webster, and the lion, secretary. Mr. J. C. Hewsoxi, has every reason for gratification. Record fields of starters representing every type of boat on the Waitemata combined to create the finest harbour scene witnessed since the war. Arrangements went off without a hitch and the spanking brees:e enabled competitors to finish in good time. The auxiliary schooner Huia “gaily dressed” with bunting for the occasion was used as flagship through the generosity of the owners. Results of the racing are as follow: The Sailing Events X Class (for cup presented by Sir Thomas Upton). The boats crossed the line in the following formation at 10.1-5: —Betty (from Canterbury). Avalon (Auckland), Colleen (representing Canterbury). Rangi, Eileen (Otago), Clyde (Wellington). Finishing times were:— Avalon, 11.59.50. Betty, 12.1.13. Colleen, 12.11.32. Clyde, 12.12.14. Eileen, 12.12.24. Rangi, 12.42.32. Result: Betty, 1; Colleen, 2; Clyde, 3. J. Patrick, skipper of Avalon, reported that he had fouled the western tide deflector mark.
