ALLCOTT AND ROWNTREE TAKE TOLL OF PONSONBY

. HORSPOOL WINS THE DAY A brilliant G-26 bowling average to Allcott and the stumping of three batsmen by the veteran wicketkeeper, Dick Rowntree, were factors in the collapse of Ponsonby in its first innings against Grafton on No. 3 wicket. Ponsonby could only score 82, and its batsmen contending with poor scoring conditions besides the keen play of Allcott and Rowntree could not make anything in the way of a stand. At one stage, Ponsonby seemed likely to score less than its meagre tally against Parnell on Saturday. The veteran. S. G. Smith, contributed a sound 21 in the middle of the innings, Monteith scored 16, and Lindrum and Hunt reached double- figures for the last wicket to make the total 82. Ponsonby played one man short. Grafton’s reply, on an improved wicket, was not impressive. Horspool’s fine batting, for a score of 54 not out, really won the game for Grafton. Six Grafton batsmen made only three runs between them, and Hcrspool’s only assistance came from Allcott, who partnered Horspool to score 20 soundly, Whelan and ltowntree, who scored 10 each. Altogether, it was a spasmodic game, brightened by Allcott’s bowling, Itowntree's wicket-keeping, and Itorspool’s batting. Finlayson bowled excellently for his,

, average of seven wickets for 50 runs. Ponsonby played out the afternoon i and returned 168 for the loss of seven ■ wickets in the second innings. A free j batting display for 6& runs by Finlayson pleased the crowd. Cleverly i scored 38 with good strokes and Fleti cher made 22. F’llaj'son had shown ' particularly good ’in in his past few 1 appearances ;;nu has distinguished ; himself in batting, bowling and fieldj ing. At the moment, he is Ponsonby’s ! most useful player.
