ON THE GREEN

Dp

Through the splendid bowling of Georg© Gladding and IT. “Sam” JenVin. of the famous Carlton Club. Auckland has participated in this season’s ‘culminating honours of the annual tournament conducted by the dominion of New Zealand Bowling Assoc iaItion at Dunedin. These two worthy I representatives of the game in the province have won the pairs championship of the Dominion, being the ‘second occasion that this test of bowl,|rfr has been annexed by bowlers from | tho Queen City—Arthur Brackebush land Max Walker, of the Auckland Club, secured the first win in 1927. ■ gam Jcnkin has shown that he is a *oud *kip by drawing the winning shot with his last bowl, while George Cladding, on whom devolves much of tho responsibility of conducting Auckland's many centre tournaments, has shown equal ability to play the game c:x the green that he has done in tho administration of executive affairs. The name of Jenkin is synonymous tvith the growth of the game in Auckj land, and Sam Jenkin is a .member of a notable bowling family. John

f Jenkin, his father, is one of the foundation members of the Rocky Kook 1 Club, where he has devoted much Lime ;md energy in nourishing the game W. H. Jenkin, another member of the family, is a well-known bowler, , and has distinguished himself in the game on many occasions, and re- , cently was prominent for the very excellent showing he made early this i month in the annual tussle for tho 'champion banner of Auckland. A. J. Jenkin is another member of the 1 family who has also had a long asso--1 ciation with the game in Auckland. These four members of the family have often been seen in team work together, the order of playing being John Jenkin, W. 11. Jenkin, A. J. Jenkin and Sam Jenkin. As a team they • have put up many excellent performances and have become famous as a family team. * * * Sam Jenkin, like the other members | of his family, learned bowling at the I Rocky Nook Club, where he commenced some 112 years ago. As n 1 player lie has always been considered ! among the. first flight in the City, and has won the championship there on I three occasions. This season he joined the Carlton Chib, tnus the famous club is able to claim participation in Dominion bowling honours again this ' year. * * » It is worthy of note that no less ! than three generations of the Jenkin family participated in the tournament conducted by tho Rocky Kook (Tub last Thursday. A. Jenkin, another member of the family, was present; on this occasion. Unlike the other members mentioned he has not participated in the game on the green, although lie has been connected with the playing of the indoor game for the past io years. G. Addess. the runner-up for the rink championship, had as members of his team two notable pla vers in W. Todd and E. Tamblyn, who won the Dominion pairs championship four years ago. They put up h great performance this season, and no doubt helped considerably to place the team well up in the list in the nnk event. s °° d bo ’ vlin S clay, looked Cor- i »aid to eagerly by Auckland bowlers, i 2 * ast “me on Saturday, when the I Kieens played with accustomed raid- 1 keenness. and he is to be commended for his fine bowling. .T. p. Mason also got his chance on Saturday and made good use of it. Only 520 entries have been received for tho Australian Bowling Carnival to bo staged at Launceston, Tasmania commencing February 17. Individual States have nominated as followsTasmania, 129 singles, 42 rinks; Victoria, 131 and 33; South Australia. 74 and IS; West Australia, 27 and 0; New South Vales, 28 and 27; Queensland, 20 and 5. The figures for tho Dominion tournament held in Auckland in 1927 compare most favourably with the combined Australian entry, for then our entries were 672, showing the popularity of tho Kew Zealand system of conducting a tournament and contrasting vividly with the Australian system, where the sudden death principle is adopted. K. Harrison, who was in Auckland last : season, nominates in “The Referee” as i possible- winners: Last season’s cham- ! pion, Frank Dobblc; Ted Pascoe, six J times champion of Victoria; W. Bleach, • who skipped a team in the Test match ! between Australia and Kew Zealand ! last season; J. C. Blair, who played as number three for Bleach, and made acquaintance with Auckland bowlers last year; .J. Williams, nine times champion of Tasmania, and other . players of outstanding ability, includ- | *ng M. Orchard, from London, who won the champion of champions in England, and was in the ranks of Auckland bowling some years ago. R. Harrison, that prolific and wellinformed writer on the art of the correct delivery of bowls, is at some pains in a recent issue of the “Referee” to discount the method of our Kew Zealand coach, Flem. Laurenson, contending that instead of holding a bowl on the fingers, it should be gripped only by the tips of the thumb and four fingers and thus delivered. As this idea of gripping a bowl is quite original and new to Kew Zealand, it will be interesting to hear individual opinions from Auckland players. It might be explained that Laurenson, like many other notable players in the Dominion, was a pupil of the famous William Carswell, who fashioned his ideas on tho action of a testing shiite for bowls, having for the final point of delivery the tips of the fingers. Laurenson’s i system is simply an elaboration of the j Carswell system.
