WIN FOR AUCKLAND
Second Sanders Cup Race OTAGO TAKES NEXT PLACE AVALON (Auckland) easily won tlie second lace of the Sanders Cup contest on the Waitemata Harbour this morning. Otago finished second, Canterbury third, and Wellington last.. Avalon won by 2min 43sec-.
The course, a triangular one. was from the starting line off King's Wharf, thence round a mark off the Bastion Point, near Kohimarama, thence across the harbour to the Sandspit Beacon, thence back round the outer mark at the starting line, twice round, a distance of eight miles. Prior to the starting time a good westerly was blowing, but this fell toward 10 o'clock, the scheduled starting time, when the airs were very light from the south-west. . The boats not being; ready, the start was delayed until 10.34 a.m. The start was a very poor one. At gunfire, Avalon was in an excellent position and shot across, at the same time setting its spinnaker brilliantly. Clj'de, three seconds later, was also very smart. Eileen (Otagol and Colleen (Canterbury) were over too soon and were ordered to recross. Eileen lost 50 seconds and Colleen, struggling back against the tide, forfeited lmin SOsec and almost capsized. The south-west wind was now light, but steady. Half way to the Bastion. Auckland and Wellington were running abreast, Avalon holding the better position. Eileen was a long way astern with Colleen a bad last. In an endeavour to reduce a heavy deficiency. Colleen stood well out into the assisting tide, while Auckland lay much further in shore. Clyde was first round the Bastion with a comfortable lead. Eileen was second and cut Avalon out at the mark by two seconds. Colleen was last. On the lead to the Sandspit the breeze freshened. At the Sandspit Eileen had captured Clyde’s position. Avalon at this stage lay third with Canterbury bringing up the rear. The boats then stood round starboard for the beat up to King’s Wharf. Avalon was now well •ahead of Wellington, with Otago 200 yards astern and Colleen still last. This tack carried the boats right into Orakei Bay, the positions being still unaltered. Auckland was the first to go about, Wellington following shortly
afterward, with Otago next and Colleen last. True to reputation, Avalon was sailing excellently on the wind. Otago had improved her position. Half way across Orakei Ba", Colleen was lying well to leeward of the other three. At the eastern tide deflector Avalon bad an advantage of one minute 30 seconds over Otago and Colleen. which had slipped ahead of Wellington, came along lmin 25sec later, Clyde being five seconds further astern. At the end of the first round the official times were: Avalon, 11.40.5. Eileen, 11.42.19 Colleen. 11.43.45. Clyde, 11.44.55. Patrick, skipper of Avalon, made what might have been a serious mistakes in rounding the home mark on starboard instead of port. In rectifying the error he lost one minute 25 seconds. Otago threw away 58 seconds through missing the mark owing to a strong tide rip. Colleen lost similar ground in doing the same. Rountree skipper of Clyde, lost nearly a minute through being overcautious at the mark. Running ba.ck to the Bastion. Avalon was a long way ahead of Eileen Colleen lay third well back and Clyde was last. Rounding the Bastion Patrick was two minutes five seconds ahead of Otago, with Colleen 25 seconds further back and Wellington 27 seconds later than the third boat. On tlie lead across to the Sandspit there was no change in position, but Avalon increased her margin. The breeze had now freshened and the boats bowled along in fine style. Tn Orakei Bay again, Avalon repeating the tactics of the first round, continued to hold her long lead to the finish. Finishing times were: Avalon, 12.41.6. Eileen, 12.45.49. Colleen. 12.47.38. Clyde, 12.47.57.
