UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
SUBSIDY SUGGESTED ON N.Z. MATERIALS The suggestion that, in addition to subsidising labour on unemployment .relief works, the Government should also pay a subsidy on material used, if such material is made or produced in New Zealand, was made to the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. 13. Taverner, yesterday. In discussing unemployment problems with the Minister yesterday, this suggestion was made by three Auckland members of Parliament, Messrs. W. J. Jordan, M. Savage, and H. G. R. Mason. It was pointed out to the Minister that the encouragement so given to use materials such as paint and cement, etc., produced in New Zealand, would be the means of creating still further employment. The Minister said he would take an early opportunity of placing the suggestion before Cabinet.
