“STAIRS OF SAND” AT LYRIC

Otto Brower, who turned out such successful pictures as “Sunset Pass” and “Avalanche,” is the director of “Stairs of Sand,” the Paramount picture, which is ndw at the Lyric Theatre. “Stairs of Sand” is, like the other two, an adaptation from one of Zane Grey’s famous best-selling novels, and is filled with thrills and gun-play, and an abundance of beautiful romance. The story has to do with a young dance-hall girl in an Arizona desert town of the late ’Bo’s, who is loved by two “bad” men of the town. Her struggle to free herself from the power of their iron wills seems futile, until a young Easterner appears upon the scene, triumphs over the menace, and wins her love. The principal roles are played by Wallace Beery, Jean Arthur, Chester Conklin and Fred Kohler. “Chinatown Charlie,” the second feature, introduces the inimitable Johnny Hines as a cheerful New York bus-driver, taking sightseers to Chinatown.
