Body Blows For Pahiatua Backers
MARJORAM’S CUP OLD MOORLAND'S SURPRISE Mpecial to TUB SVU P AH I ATI J A, "Wednesday. ‘ Followers of form received some i shocks at Pallia tua today, on the ocea- ! sion of the opening of the Pahiatua ltacing Club's annual meeting. Several i poorly-backed runners came to light ! and on the whole investors hail a lean day. The day wife chilly and windy ! and the track in fair condition. ' ' Totalisator investments reached i £14,141, against £114,432, a decrease of I £l9l. The Maiden The day opened with the success : of a favourite. General Gas, in the j Maiden race, and from what was seen cf him lie is the most likely of a poor lot to develop into a presentable hick. Before the top bend was reached the two Awapuni representatives, Lady Lackham and Black Acre had hit the front from General Gas and Spear Corm, with Acreline racing next. They turned into the straight in that order, but Lady Lackham retired at the distance, while Black Acre was deposed by General Gas and Spearform in turn, the last-named failins to reach General Gas in the run to the post, a bare half length separating them. Black Acre was a short length away, and Highland Mystery was fourth, with Acreline and Tunbridge next to finish. Black Acre weakened somewhat unexpectedly and evidently the long straight found a weak spot in him. tjpearfnrm was under pressure all the way down the straight and stuck to her task genuinelj , but General Gas was just too solid for her. The pace shown by Lady Lackham was surprisingly good, but she is a poor staveiat present. y Ballance High-weight Two heavily-backed runners Roval Lineage and Cerf. let their backers down in the Ballance High-weight Handicap, and victory went to Borsalene, over which followers of A T> Webster’s stable had a good 'win! oook left on terms with the field this time and was bustled to the front to pilot Werata, Cerf, Borsalene and Captain Gazeley, who were in rough line along the back, there being practically no change throughout. Cook was stiij in front at the distance, but he compounded, leaving Werata in the van The outsider promised to be the winner until Borsalene came with a strong finishing run to beat him home bv a length, with Royal Lineage halt a iength further away. Corf was fourth with Cook and Captain Gazeley next Borsalene was patiently handled by A. Hobson, but Werata might have won had he come home straight. Royal Lineage s want of solidity catne uppermost in the finish. il e was very well handled by Bowden, who took the shortest route all the way and was in no hurry to make his effort, but Royal Uneage could not muster up much da«h at the business end. Cerf finished behind Royal Lineage, but covered a lot more ground. Cook and Captain Gazeley ran very fair races. Hamua Hack weakened the Hamua Hack Handicap field, but even so Disrank was backed with inexcusable confidence considering his past failures. He registered one more failure and no excuse can be made for him. The early pace in the race was not great end the jumper Birkbeck was out making the running. Approaching the turn Bay Lass and Kilorell both improved their positions. the former being in behind Birkbeck as they came across the too, with Kilorell on terms with Fallow. Once landed in the straight Kilorell came up to the. leaders and drew away to win nicely by a length and a -half from Bay Lass, who held off Moth plane by half a length. Bisrank and Gold Bag were right up, with Birkbeck next. Kilorell was well backed and he won decisively. Mothplane was a little disappointing as she failed to come on as well as usual. Bay Lass was at a long price. She is not a bad-looking mare, but little was known of her and in her last start at Aslihurst she fell. Gold Bag ran fairly well, but his apprentice rider found difficulty in getting the best out of him. The Gold Cup Marjoram was a quiet tip for the Cup, but most backers stuck to Ora~rix. Blimp, Billion and Teri. Oratrix’s appearance gained her many admirers, and Blimp looked better than usual. Joy Bird and Blimp were in the van from Queen’s Choice, Mountain Heath, Billion and Oratrix as they passed through the straight, but Blimp dropped back turning into the back, where Grattus could be observed making his way through his field. Joy Bird and Grattus were well clear of the bunch as they passed the half-mile post, Joy Bird being the first to weaken, but at the home turn Marjoram quickly ran up to Grattus and was thereafter never seriously troubled to win by a length and ahalf from Royal Game, who came fast on the outside to head off Teri on the post. Grattus was another head away, and then came Oratrix and Mountain Heath, with a gap to Queen’s Choice and Blimp. The failure of Oratrix was largely due to the rough run sho got. but she will pay to watch. Blimp ran one of his worst races. Marjoram won like a racehorse and is considerably improved. Teri should go well over a slightly shorter journey and Grattus is coming on nicely. Joy Bird finished badly after leading for a mile. Konini Hack Of the four who contested the Konini Hack Handicap the evenlybacked favourites, High Society and Airforce, dead-heated. High Society seemed to have the race won, but his small rider could not help him over the final furlong, and under the whip Airforce got up to dead-heat. Until the stick was applied Airforce was loafing Makuri Hack The troubles of bettors continued the Makuri Hack Handicap, the Aslihurst double winner, Abbey Queen, "as a hot favourite, with Ex Bono also heavily backed, but both failed, and Golden Shadow won at double figures. Crossing the top Golden Shadow made a forward move, and was in behind Dainty Ways as they came into the straight, with Ex Bono and Abbey Queen in attendance. Over the final furlong St. Melba finished full of runr *ng, but could not reach Golden Shadow, who had three parts of a ;*ngth to sp;tre at the post, with a gap two lengths to Dainty Ways, who M ’as a head in front of Abbey Queen, die favourite having stopped badly. I hen came Ex Bono and The Dove. Golden Shadow was at a rather false
price, as he has previously proved useful * n this class. He won fiuite decisively today, though St. Melba was going strongly at the finish. Abbey Queen found her increased weight and the long straight against her, and Ex Bono ran a dud race. President’s Handicap One more blow- came with the President’s Handicap, in which Bonogne was beaten on the post after being backed down to odds on. Banket got the best of tiie start, and soon established a big lead. She was still well clear at the straight, where Bonogne, Bobbin, and Moorland were together, but the leader stopped badly, and inside the distance Bonogne wrested the lead. With the favourite promising to be the winner, Moorland came with a great finishing burst to get up to rob the favourite of the honours by a nose, with Veronese a length back. Banket struggled into fourth berth, just ahead Bobbin, who had run a somewhat erratic course. It was good to see Moorland roll into his work down the straight. The long run home suited him admirably. Reed timed his run on Bonogne nicely, but did not reckon on Moorland’s dash from the back. Backers of Bonogne lost much of their outlay* Veronese’s running is suggestive of her returning to form. Eketahuna Hack Llyn Da, a solid favourite, looked to have the Eketahuna Handicap won when he petered out nearly a furlong from home, and Tourist, nicely nursed, came to the front. Tourist stalled off a late run by General Gas, and won by a length and a-half, with Llyn Du the same distance away third, and Water spear fourth. Tourist won with a. little in reserve, and owing to the backing for Llyn Du and Waterspear, paid a good price.
