Carl Idem third. Crimestor, Haviland, Tetrarchate, Biddy Comet, Quinsiilia, Gay Cockade and Awamutu were next to arrive. Calliope Handicap The Hard Words-Smithfield bracket, £1,837. was the chief fancy for the two-year-old heat. Sub Editor £706 and Hampton Park £687 being next in demand. Foot Rule led out smartly, but with a furlong gone Hard Words had joined the filly, and they showed the way to Tremetus, Set Fair, Full Measure and Bells of Shandon. Hard Words led round the turn from Set Fair, Tremetus, Bells of Shandon Full Measure, Silene, Hampton Park and Karangapai, and despite a strong challenge from Tremetus, the Diacquenod youngster hung on to score by less than a length, with Full Measure a similar distance away third. Then came Set Bells of Shandon, Silene, Foot Rule, Karangapai, Hampton Park, Sub Editor. Smithfield, Spring Song and Topstar. Hauraki Hack llavaspot £2,265 was a very hot favourite for the Hauraki Hack Handicap, and it really looked as if he was a good thing beaten. Prince of Orange £1,240 and Kawainga, £595 were the only others backed. Dark Prince got the worst of the bumping that occurred at the start. Havaspot leading out of the straight from Avon Court, Brampton, Kawainga, Prince of Orange (wide out), Diamond Queen, Always and Dark Prince. Entering the back Prince of Orange and Brampton had drawn to the front and they led past the five from Kawainga, Havaspot (pulling hard), Avon Court, Always and Diamond Queen. Prince of Orange, Brampton and Kawainga were in a line* at the home turn, with Havaspot tucked in behind on the rails. The favourite tried to get through on the inner hut had to pull out, and in the meantime Kawainga had settled the pretensions of Prince of Orange and Brampton. In the end Kawainga won by a neck from the unlucky Havaspot, who was travelling fast at the post, and Prince of Orange was half a length away third, well clear of Brampton. Next were Always, Diamond Queen and Dark Prince, with Avon Court a bad last. Stewards’ Handicap Only half, a dozen came out for the open sprint, the course defections being White Wings, Golden Wedding, Refresher and Valuation. There was some spirited speculation, Lady Quex £2,149 winding up a good favourite; but there was also a lot of money for Gold Money £1,416, Awarere £1,282 and Prince Val £1,083. Prince Val jumped out fast from Awarere, Gold Money, Lady Quex and Taneriri, hut at the end of a furlong Lady Quex had run through to the lead, and she led past the half-mile from Awarere, this pair being clear of Prince Val, Town Bird, Taneriri and Gold Money, the last named having tailed off abruptly. Lady Quex had an advantage over Prince Val at the home turn, with daylight back to Awarere, Taneriri, and Gold Money, with Town Bird last. Once in line Lady Quex made no race of it, winning very easily by three lengths from Prince Val, and Gold Money was right up third. Taneriri was fourth and Awarere fifth. The winner outclassed her field. Following are the results:
