Yaldhurst Shield to Return to Auckland

BRIDSON WINS rough water polo final Special to THE SUX GREYMOUTH, Today. By a narrow margin, Auckland succeeded in holding the Yaldhurst i Shield, which means swimming leadership in the Dominion, from Canterbury. The contest was close, the northern city scoring 41 points to Canterbury’s 37. The lion’s share of the Auckland t a iiy was compiled by Gordon Bridson, who was never extended in winning all the men’s events, from 100yds to the mile. He should go further than Dominion honours. Canterbury, for the first time in , many years, scored in the junior I events. Otago had a splendid number of youthful swimmers, winning the War Memorial Trophy with ease. A fine, though cold evening favoured the champions for the concluding tourney last evening. There were no surprises, though some enthusiasts were of opinion that either Miss p. Robertson (Auckland) oi* Miss M. Farquhar (Auckland) would win the women's 100yds from Miss K. Miller (Wellington). They finished on the pipe rail, however, instead of at the end of the bath, and Miss N. Stratton (Wanganui) followed suit, allowing Miss Jepson (Otago) to gain second place, tnough she was actually last. Canterbury, for the first time in its history, won the flying squadron, in which five men swam 100 yards each. The winning team was A. T. F. Stokes, A. T. Bolam, L. Moorehouse, E. McConville, and J. O. Hattersley. They j opened up a good lead, and, when Stokes dived in, he was able to set Bridson, who was last man for Auckland, an impossible task. J. Magee (Auckland) had a swim over in the boys* intermediate breaststroke. and he was only a second behind the New Zealand record for salt water. MISS PIDGEON’S VICTORY The 220yd3 Dieast-stroke for women was a good scoring event for Auckland, Miss G. Pidgeon, the title-holder, ' having no difficulty in retaining it. Miss J. Thomson (Auckland) followed her home, with Miss L. Broadhead "Wanganui) third. The time was not fast. Gordon Bridson did not* leave the quarter-mile event in doubt, and when he touched for his first length the watch showed 18 3-ssec.- At the first 100, Stokes was a couple of yards behind, and then Bridson gained, nearly a yard a lap from the Southerner. Bridson finished in 5.36 2-5, and Stokes took 13 seconds more to finish. Claridge was third, but the "Wellington man was a. lap behind Stokes. In the. 50yds invitation race J. Enwright (Auckland) won from Claridge in 27 4-ssec. In the final rounds of the men’s diving the judges placed the titleholder, R. C. Caller (Otago) first, with W. Keesing (Westport) second, and H. E. Walker third. As usual, Canterbury and Auckland met in the final for the water polo trophy, but it was an unsatisfactory game, ending in a scoreless draw. The Southerners narrowly missed with three shots. When time was called, the teams elected to play on for two minutes, but two swimmers took cramp simultaneously within a minute of resuming. The referee stopped the game. The water polo trophy will be held by Canterbury and Auckland for half a year each. The game was marred by rough play, but the referee was reluctant to order men out of the water. * Results: 440Yds. Men’s Championship.—G. Bridson (Auckland), 1; A. Stokes (Canterbury), 2; C.
