BIG FIRE AT TURUA

Houses and Shops Burned

CARS AND GARAGE DESTROYED From Our Own Correspondent NGATEA, Today. TWO shops, two houses, and a garage in Hauraki Street, Trrua, were destroyed by fire at 2 a.m. today.

The buildings destroyed were: Grocer’* shop, occupied by H. C. Christie, and owned by A. J. Entrican, Auckland. Draper’s shop, occupied by Mrs. J. J. Taylor, and owned by A. J. Entrican, Auckland. Garage, occupied by W. Bedford and J. J. Taylor, and owned by J. H. Johnston, of Turua. House of five rooms, occupied by H. C. Christie, and owned by J. A. Bennett, Turua. House of five rooms, occupied by K. Cosson. and owned by J. A. Bennett, Turua. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it started in the grocer's shop, end, with a high wind, rapidly spread to the adjoining draper’s shop, and then attacked the garage. On the other side, the fire spread quickly, and destroyed Christie's house, and then demolished Cosson’s house next door. Owing to the lack of fire-fighting appliances and water supply, nothing could be done to save, the buildings, bnt residents worked hard to save furniture and contents of the buildings. age. The majority were saved, but three cars, two tractors, three motorcycles, and about £2OO worth ot tyres and machinery were destroyed. The Insurances were as follow: J. H. Johnston, £2OO on building, and £llO on interest in fittings, New Zealand Office. Bedford and Taylor, £4lO on stock, New Zealand Office. H. C. Christie, £IOO on interest in stock, and £l5O on furniture, New Zealand Office. ,T. A. Bennett, £520 on house. Mrs. Taylor’s stock was not insured. The insurance on Entrican’s building is not available. Cosson’s furniture was not insured, but all except about £ 20 worth was saved. FIRE AT WAINUI BEACH LADY CARROLL’S HOUSE Press Association GISBORNE, Today. A seven-roomed house at Wainui Beach, owned by Lady Carroll, and occupied by Mr. W. Carroll, was destroyed by fire early this morning.
