PROGRESS WEST OF QUEEN STREET POST OFFICE SECURED The proposals of the West of Queen Street Development Association were laid before the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, and the Town Clerk, Mr, J. S. Brigham, by a deputation of IS members, at the Town Hall yesterday. This was an informal gathering, but a detailed scheme will be forwarded to the City Council shortly. The director of the association, Mr. A. J. Hutchinson, indicated that the purpose of the association was to assist In every possible way in developing the area bounded by Queen Street and Nelson Street, between Cook Street and the waterfront, as a wholesale and retail shopping district. The interest and co-operation of the members and officers of the City Council was essential to success, and was therefore being sought. The deputation included the following businessmen from the area affected: Messrs. J. Adams, of J. M. King and Co.; L. J. Armitage, of Warnock Bros.; J. E. Astley, -of E. Astley and Sons, Ltd.: M. Bowles, of D. and J. Miller, Ltd.; Geo. J. Browne, of Geo. J. Browne and Co.; H. D. Guthrie, of Guthrie, Bowron and Co.; F. M. Hills, of Thompson and Hills: Jas. Lowe, of Auckland Gas Company: D. F. MaeCormiek, of Models, Ltd.; W. E. Owen, of Owen, Rayner, Ltd.; W. Parkinson, of W. Parkinson and Co.: W. R. Penn, of Alfred Buckland and Co.; M. W. Shroff, of M. W. Shroff and Co.: J. A. Steele, of Watson, Steele and Ganley; J. W. Wiseman, of Wiseman and Co.; Eric Yates, of Arthur Yates and Co.

Business interests in this locality have been instrumental in securing a post office to serve the area. The Hon. J. B. Donald, just before relinquishing his portfolio of PostmasterGeneral, agreed to the request, and two shops in the Manchester Unity Buildings fronting Victoria Street West are now being remodelled. The office will be open for business in about* three weeks. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and all classes of postal and telegraphic traffic will be handled, although the parcels office in Albert Street will look after the more bulky articles. This success has encouraged business interests in Anzac. Avenue to put forward their claims for a branch office. The postal authorities have instituted a check on traffic handled for this area, but no decision as to the merit of the application has yet been announced.
