RATING INCIDENCE
NORTHCOTE COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION RELIEF UNWARRANTED That whatever the position might be elsewhere, relief from local rating at Northcote was not warranted, was decided by the Northcote Borough Council last evening when a questionaire on the subject of the incidence of rating upon farm lands within boroughs was discussed. ' The Mayor, Mr. E. A. Greenslade, presided. The questionaire has been circulated by a committee appointed by the executive of the Municipal Association. In Northcote, the lands which would be affected by the proposed Urban Farm Lands Rating Bill constituted a little more than half the borough in area, but the valuation of these lands was slightly under one-sixth of the total rateable value, showing that the valuer, when making this assessment, took into consideration the nature and use of such lands. Any cases of hardship might be provided for by a simple amendment to the Rating Act, giving any owner or occupier of farm land the right of lodging an objection at any time prior to February 15 in any year, asking for revision of valuation. A letter was received from Dr. Tl. Chesson. medical officer of health, suggesting that the council should agree that the area to be served in the collection of refuse for the purpose of the North Shore destructor agreement should.be the whole area to the south of a line commencing at the eastern end of Gordon Road and proceeding westward, including the southern frontages only to Onewa Road as far as Church Street, thence in a southerly direction and including both frontages of Church, Clarence and Talbot Streets. He would arrange for this area to be officially defined. On the motion of Mr. F. Wilson it was decided to agree to the area outlined and to notify Dr. Chesson accordingly. The district telegraph engineer, Mr. E. C. Gage, wrote agreeing to the request that the new telegraph cables from the Northcote Wharf to the post office should be laid along the bank down the kerb on the lowel level, rather than that the roadway just put down at the Queen Street high level should be disturbed. In. the meantime, one of the cables was being terminated at the head of the wharf, and from there would be carried on by open aerial wires.
