TAUMARUNUI NEWS

The Postmaster-General, Sir Joseph Ward, was recently wired to by Mr. F- Langstone, M.P. for Waimarino, asking for advice as to when a commencement could be expected with the erection of the new post office promised for Taumarunui. Mr. Langstone stressed the growing inadequacy of the present structure, and expressed a hope that as Cabinet had agreed to the work and the money was available, the building should be immediately proceeded with. The Minister replied to the effect that he would look into the representations. * * * A subject of considerable importance to the future of the Taumarunui and Districts "Winter Show Association has been under discussion between the Borough Council and the Lands Department, find it seems possible will come to an impasse. At the latter end of last year the association, owing to the extraordinary growth of its shows, deemed it necessary to erect its own commodious buildings, and approached the council for a, grant of land for the purpose on the recreation reserve. Being in doubt regarding its powers in the matter the council sought a ruling from the Lands Department, and has been advised by that authority that only under certain very clearly defined conditions could such a request be entertained; and there was considerable doubt that the land could be leased for the purpose required, under the existing law covering such lands. The council has notified the association of the department’s attitude, and the next move on the association’s part will be watched with interest, as it is abundantly evident that any existing accommodation will not house the annual show property * * * The Taumarunui Boy Scouts, under Mr. H. Pain, have gone under canvas on the property of Mrs. D. McLennan, at Taringamotu. The delightful weather of the past few days has made the venture possible, \nd it is expected that the camp will be very successful.
