FRACAS IN INDIA
LIVELY CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY NATIONAL FLAG HOISTED United it A . — l>y Telegraph — Copyright DELHI, Monday. Independence Day was celebrated throughout India yesterday with enthusiasm. The red, white and green flag of the Indian National Congres* was hoisted in the presence of vast crowds. A fracas ensued at Bombay between Nationalists and Communists, but the police adopted a policy of non-inter-ference. This was generally justified by the absence of disorder. At Delhi the flag of the Congress was unfurled in the presence of 6,000 people. The ceremony was followed by monster processions. In most centres the Moslems and Sikhs refrained from joining in the celebrations. A national flag was hoisted over the Calcutta municipal buildings for the first time in the history of that city.
