NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
AUCKLAND WILL CELEBRATE TOMORROW MANY SPORTS ATTRACTIONS Tomorrow Auckland will bo 90 years old and a general holiday will be observed to celebrate Anniversary Day. The day actually perpetuates the historic arrival of Governor Hobson at the Bay of Islands in 1840 with a commission to proclaim British sovereignty. The transfer of the capital from Kororureka to the Waitemata and the founding of the City were made later in the same year. Shops and offices, including the banks and public offices, will be closed tomorrow. Being also Auckland’s Regatta Day, the harbour will be dotted with trim yachts. An interesting event will be the Sanders Cup race for 14-footers. Numerous competitions will also be held for speed -boats and outboard motor-boats. The flagship will be the schooner Huia, moored off Calliope Dock. The Takapuna Jockey Club will commence Its summer meeting at Takapuna racecourse tomorrow. In addition, the Auckland Cricket Association and the Auckland City and Suburban < 'rieket Assoication will hold a number of full-round competition matches for all grades. The Auckland Bowling Centre h3s arranged several club tournaments, in addition to the championship rink competition to be held at the Remuera ground, and the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association has arranged championship matches for C grade and the outer suburban clubs. The Hamilton Bowljng Club will hold its annual egatta on the Waikato River and the Ai ckland Rifle Association’s championship will be held a,t Penrose.
Round the City, beaches and bays will be crowded by picnickers, numerous business Arms as well as friendly societies having arranged to hold their picnic** at such places as Motuihj Island, Henderson Domain and Swanson Park.
