THOSE POSITIONS

SUITABILITY OF WAIKATO FOR REGATTAS AUCKLANDER’S LETTER A prominent Auckland oarsman has written to “Rigger’’ stating his point of view in the unfortunate suggestion that has been current in Auckland over Hamilton’s good fortune in drawing the majority of inside positions for its own regatta. The Waitemata executive wishes it made clear that it is through no allegation of unfairness in the draw that the club has withdrawn its support from the regatta, though the committee is. of course, aware that there is considerable dissatisfaction among the members. Granted that there is an advantage in the inside position on the Waikato and that Hamilton has been fortunate of late years, there can be no reasonable oarsman in the province who could suggest a fraud on the part of the Hamilton Regatta Committee. The letter reads as follows: “When commenting in last Tuesday’/? Sun on the non-entrance of Auckland and Waitemata Clubs for the forthcoming Hamilton regatta, one of Hamilton’s rowing officials referred to Hamilton’s luck in the drawing of positions for the last two 3 r ears. “The following tables,' which, exclude senior four races of two miles, are compiled from programmes of the regattas, and show Hamilton’s luck of the two seasons, 1928 and 1929, referred to in your column, and also the luck of the two seasons immediately preceding the two years mentioned. Hamilton's No. of Positions.

“For the 1929 regatta five races were won from the No. 1 position, three from No 2 position, and one only from any other, Hamilton’s light maiden four winning from No. 4 position. This fact makes one inclined to think crews in the No. 1 and 2 positions have an advantage over other crews. Hamilton won seven of the above races and Tauranga two of them. “The above information is forwarded so that anyone who has followed the comments to date may be aware of the positions Hamilton has had the good fortune to draw for the last four seasons. “The draw for next "Wednesday's regatta appeared on page 11 of the Sun last Thursday and Hamilton, with 19 entries this year, has drawn five No. 1 positions and eight No. 2 positions in* 11 events, two of which; however, have only two entries.” ST. GEORGE’S COLOURS Many years ago St. George’s men rowed in red and white hoops, Mr. V. Dunne told “Rigger” yesterday. The colours were distinctive and have been worn by many famous oarsmen. When the N.Z.R.A. decided that all affiliated clubs register their colours, it was discovered that the Union Club, Napier, had the same colours as St. George’s, so, the East Coast Club being senior, St. George’s had to make a change. As the Napier Union is now defunct, St. George’s has notified by the N.Z.R.A. that its members are at liberty to revert to the old colours. A special general meeting is to be held to consider the change. Whether to stick to the red with the white V neck, or whether to return the former hoops, that w ill question. WHAU PREPARATIONS Sub-committee.s were appointed at the last meeting of the A.R.A. to make detailed preparations for the Provincial Regatta on the Whau next month. The order of events, which is the same as last season, w r ith one exception, is as follows:—Maiden doubles, junior fours, maiden fours, senior fours, single sculls, maden fours, eight-oar race, junior pairs, youth’ fours, maiden pairs. The total prize-money is £6l and trophies. The only difference in the events is that, there will be no eight-oared race between town and country clubs this year. There will however, be an eightoared event, which will be more of an exhibition row than anything else. The sub-committees will make arrangements for transport, tickets and other details. All oarsmen are invited to attend a working day at the Whau next week-end. The starter for this season will be Mr. R. Pooley and the judges Messrs. J. Clark, W. G. Mason and H. deal.
