BRIDSON’S FOURTH WIN

DOMINATES SWIMMING AT GREYMOUTH VICTORY TO MISS RAINEY j Special to THE SI X GREYMOUTH. Today. j Gordon Bridson pursued the even tenor of his way at the third carnival of the New Zealand swimming j championships last evening. The j races were quite interesting, though I there were no surprises. The northern champion won the ; 220yds event with a good deal in hand, but he just failed to break D. P. Lindsay’s record of 2.29. He was just a fraction over. When the men set off, Bridson jumped to the lead, but A. T. F. Stokes, Canterbury, was with him in 17sec at the first end. The Aucklander was ahead again at the second length in 38 3-5, and the hundred was covered in 61 1-5. In the fourth length, Stokes and C. Claridge, Wellington, were fairly even, but Stokes left Claridge over the last two lengths. By the time 200 yards was covered, Bridson led Stokes by seven yards, and Claridge was well back. The winner clocked 2.29 3-5, and Stokes 2.35. It was necessary to swim heats in the 100yds intermediate boys’ championship, and the two Christchurch boys, Hattersley and McConville, easily won their heats. In the final, Hattersley disappointed with his turns, and did not beat McConville, but he easily accounted for R. Thomas (Auckland), who was well within the standard. THREE FINE SWIMMERS Never has there been such a trio of swimmers as in this event in the history of New 'Zealand swimming. R. Geddes, the Otago swimmer, won the 220yds junior event comfortably, with a team-mate, Jarvis, second, and N. Crump, a young Aucklande \ third. Two polo games were played, Canterbury defeating ’Welling'ton by five goals to two, and Otago defeating West Coast. Miss Edna Rainey, a fine young swimmer from Auckland, beat* Miss Rhoda Lowe (Canterbury) in 80 l-ssec in the 100yds junior girls’ race. The 220yds breast-stroke was an easy thing for L. Smith, Wanganui. G D. Griffiths, Canterbury, was second, but his time was slow. Miss N. Stratton (Wanganui), in the 100yds women’s back-stroke, beat Miss K. Miller (Wellington) and Miss Jenson (Otago) with ease. ~T l; g Otago intermediate girl, Miss M. Mathleson, -non the 220yds event li-om Miss Sybil Brown, Auckland, fairly comfortably.
