Tomorrow’s Card
POPULAR SUMMER FIXTURE OPENS Review of a Splendid Programme WITH a week’s fine weather the course at Takapuna is in excellent order for its popular summer meeting, which is to open tomorrow and will be concluded on Saturday. Tomorrow is Anniversary Day, so there promises to be a very large attendance. Splendid fields are engaged tomorrow, and the sport should be of the best. “Early Bird’s” review of the card and his final summing-up is given below. 1 ? Of this lot Neil 8 0 the best half dozen may be Coll, Praetor, On Top, Honiton, Nassau Lady and Bold Archer. It is a particularly open race and should be responsible for betting taking a wide range. However, prime fancies may be: ON TOP, BOLD ARCHER and PRAETOR 10 AZ OREWA HIGH-WEIGHT Of £250; 9 furlongs Wenday . .10 1(» The topweight showed good form on the Taranaki Glena Bay . 10 5 holiday circuit, and raced prominently on this course G< w e ” in 3 at the last meeting. Glena Bay was a bit 10 1 unlucky to go under to Hakanoa in the Waipapakauri Guard 913 Cup, and he will be better suited by this race. Golden Master Boon 9 12 Wedding is one to be respected, for she has plenty of Luminary . 911 pace, and it was on this track two months back that he Mashoor ... 9 8 gave evidence of returning to his best. King’s Guard, Cybele .... 9 3 the hero of the hurdle events at Ellerslie recently, is S-ang • • * 9 0 obviously tuned right up, and he is a possibility in his “view 9 o engagements on the flat. Master Doon has not shown % * any form for a long time, but Luminary, who is very speedy, reads well. Mashoor and Cybele have improved a lot of late, and the other two, Serang and Harbour View, could not be backed with confidence. Favourites, in the probable absence of GLENA BAY, may be: QUINCOMA, GOLDEN WEDDING and MASHOOR 1 OA ZEALANDIA HANDICAP Of £350; 7 furlongs Branson ... 9 0 Recent running points strongly to Mithra . . . Maori Boy Cynthia N. . 7 0 too went well at Thames, where he was ridden into the ground. Sir Russell is one of the most promising handicap horses in commission, and he is certainly going to be hard to beat on this track. Envoy walked away with the Thames sprint, and Good Boy, although he raced very prominently at the same fixture, may find those above him most formidable opponents. Gemlight, White Wings, Monsogne (winner of the big race the second day at Stratford), Mosaic, Macroom and Glenstar may be the best of the others. In an interesting market, the betting may favour: SIR RUSSELL, BRANSON and ENVOY 9 1 C TAKAPUNA CUP Of £800; 1 mile 3 furlongs 40 yards Prodice ... 9 0 The field for this very old-estab- Lucy Rose . 7 4 In the Shade 8 9 lished event is sufficient to ensure Eager Rose . 7 1 Corinax ... 8 7 a stirring contest throughout. In being given 9.0 she has been given a good horse’s weight, but looking back it has to be borne in mind that she won here in the spring with Sib less, and since then she won the Te Awamutu Cup, and at Ellerslie a few days later she was fifth in the Auckland Cup, and third in both the A.R.C. Handicap and Grandstand Handicap. She was well tuned up for the Wellington Cup when a leg filled and she had to be eased, but as she was very forward the respite might not have affected her. In the Shade has raced badly of late, and he could not be recommended. Corinax will probably be a better horse than at Ellerslie a month ago, and he has got through a splendid preparation. It will be interesting to see how he handles his 8.7. Royal Doulton, if caught just right, would be able to beat the lot, for she is brilliant when in the mood. Her Summer Cup victory was most impressive. True Blood failed at Stratford during the holidays, but he is susceptible to improvement. High Pitch is a possibility with his light impost, and so too is Lucy Rose, who is very nearly at her best. She had Historic all out in the Grandstand Handicap at Ellerslie, and she is as game as a pebble. This course should suit Lucy Rose. Eager Rose is being tried out in this good company, and will not be disgraced. Le Choucas did well on this course in the spring, and his second to Taneriri in the Thames Cup was illuminating. Transformer, Hipo and Flying Juliet are the others engaged, and of the three the last-named is preferred, for she is coming back to form. It is a fine field. ROYAL DOULTON is preferred of them all, but in view of the fact that she is hard to. follow —the big race the second day should see her star in the ascendant — backers may go for: PRODICE, CORINAX and LUCY ROSE o A FERRY HANDICAP Of £250; 7 furlongs Roman Pearl 0 0 This is a big field, remarkable Lucky Alice . 711 Gay Cockade 8 9 perhaps more for quantity than Quinsilia . . 710 Carl°id?m ' ‘ 8 2 quality. Bells of Shandon is on the up grade, and Hard Words, one of the fastest youngsters in commission, will go fast on this turning track. Full Measure is the only other to have shown sufficient pace to get into the money, but several of the newcomers have displayed pace in their track essays. When the final figures are rung up the best-backed may be: HARD WORDS, HAMPTON PARK and TREMETUS A 9ft HAURAKI HACK HANDICAP Of £300; 9 furlongs Kawainga . . But he is fast enough if he is sufficiently brilliant over six furlongs now that he has been raced over middle distances. Taneriri has won his last three races, and he is in exactly the same position over a sprint journey as Prince Val. Now that Awarere has got back to form he is going to take all sorts of beating, but the most likely improver is Gold Money. If she gets beaten there will be many long faces. Lady Quex. despite her recent failures, is one that will take some beating, but White Wings will need to have made a sharp improvement on Thames l unning. Refresher is highly thought of. and there is no doubt this three-year-old will be found a formidable proposition tomorrow and Saturday. Town Bird goes fast and stops faster. Valuation is a promising improver. capable of capturing a good sprint. Golden Wedding could not be liked in this race. The five that appear to stand out are Awarere. G ;d Money, Lady Quex. Refresher and Valuation, and backers may narrow the issue down to: GOLD MONEY, AWARERE and VALUA-T iOH
indefatigable president, Mr. T. H. Kenny, who worked very hard indeed*. Backed up by an energetic executive, future meetings of the Waipapakauri Racing Club should be worth looking forward to by racegoers. There xwas sonn plendid racing. Mr. F. J. McManemin’s handicapping being responsible. A new find in starters was unearthed in Mr. R. G. Hosking. of Whangarei, whose dispatches from the barrier were excellent throughout. Mr. A. Tronson, of Auckland, occupied the judge’s box. and he gave his decisions very promptly. Altogether the meeting was* a remarkable success, and those associated with it are deserving of every congratulation.
