GOLDEN WEDDING

MR. AND MRS. J. E. MORLAND From Our Oxen Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Today. Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Morland, of Pukekohe, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Morland were married in the Congregational Civ.’ Onehunga, by the Rev. Mr. Am,. n January 29, 1880. Mr. Morland was a timber merchant at Onehunga and was a partner in the firm of Rowe and Company, sawmillers, Mamaku. After their marriage they resided at Onehunga, Mamaku and Paeroa, coming to Pukekohe 12 years ago. Mr. Morland is a native of England and came to New Zealand with his parents 66 years ago, being then eight years of age. Pie lived at Auckland and Onehunga. When Mrs. Morland, who was a Miss Goodman, was born at New Plymouth during the Taranaki Maori war, the house was guarded by armed sentries, her mother and two children being the only women and children outside of the barracks at the time. Owing to the hostility of the Maoris the family was compelled to remove to Nelson, and there she spent the greater portion of her life. The family of Mrs. Morland’s mother, the Lethbridges, were some of the earliest pioneers of Taranaki. They came to New Zealand in the ship William Bryan with 40 others, arriving at Cloudy Bay on March 19, 1841, after a voyage lasting foLir months.
