MARRIED IN HASTE

DENTAL MECHANIC TO PAY MAINTENANCE CONFIRMATION OF ORDER Special to THE’ SUN HA lILTON, Monday. An application Tor tlie conlirmation •f a maintenance order for T2 a week provisionally made in England, was hoard in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court today before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. The plaintiff was Violet Varnham, of Ilford, Essex, and the defendant was Harold Ernest Varnham, aged 31, dental mechanic, of Hamilton. Mr. J. F. Strang opposed the application and asked that the case be remitted back to England for further evidence. He said his client left New Zealand with the 15th Reinforcements and after a week’s acquaintance with plaintiff in England in 15)17 he married her. lie went to France a ievv days liter and was seriously wounded while on active service. Varnham received a letter from a man who said he was living with Mrs. Varnham and suggested that defendant should take divorce proceedings. Defendant took no action beyond cancelling the allowance he had provided for his wife. Varnham returned to New Zealand, but on his father-in-laws representations he agreed to forgive his wife, who camo out to New Zealand and lived with him at Levin* In 1924 Varnham and his wife visited England and as a result of suspicions he entertained concerning his wife he left her. He was reluctant to commence divorce ~ roceedings. There were no children of the marriage. The parties could not agree as to the terms of separation, but a partial arrangement was made, and Varnham returned to New Zealand. He recently received advice that a provisional order for maintenance had made against him. After defendant had supported counsel’s statement, the magistrate teld ihat defendant's story was founded on suspicion only, and there was not sufficient evidence to warrant jne case being remitted back to EngLtDd. Ho therefore confirmed the order.
