MANAWATU GORGE SLR
GANGS STILL AT WORK DEBRIS BEING WASHED AWAY PALMERSTON N., Today. The recent slip on the railway lind in the Manawatu Gorge is still giving employment to a large gang of men and there are many hundreds of tons to be cleared away. The worlj will take several weeks. The line itself is clear, but hugd masses of earth and rock are overhanging the line and would probably fall after further rain. A sluice gun was being used until yesterday, but M it was not powerful enough to reach the higher parts of the face a dam is now being built in the hills a quarter of a mile away to increase the tsR of water. A spring has been blocked and the water will have a fall of 140 CL giving sufficient force to wash awapj the spoil, which will drop into tn| river below the line.
