CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS

C GRADE CONTESTS MANY INTERESTING GAMES ' Junior championship tournament games were featured on Auckland tennis courts on Saturday. Play was conducted under ideal weather conditions, and the courts, generally, were in excellent order. The principal I event of the day was the C grade championship tournament conducted by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. This tournament is a recent innovation of the association, designed principally to give the younger players a chance to gain some experience in tournament play prior to entering for the senior championships. In the past a large number of players, not quite up to senior championship standard, have been given little opportunity of a trial of skill among players of their own class. Saturday’s contests proved that C grade matches could be most interesting, and although play was conducted largely on the defensive, most entrants showed qualifications fit for a place in any inter-club contest. Many close games were played In the men’s singles, Barfoot, Aubin, Spence, Latta and J. N. Wilson were among the outstanding players. The generalship of E. Hickson, Auckland’s president, proved too sound for Kay and Reader in two fairly close sets. In the women’s singles a good service and a well-played forehand drive helped Miss A. O’Brien in a very interesting contest with Mrs. Jackson. Miss D. Waters was the victor in a hardfought match with Miss R. Thompson. Good volleying helped Misses Prideaux and Savin to win one of the keenest matches of the day against Misses Solomon and Crookes. The final rounds of the C grade championships will be playfed off on Stanley Street courts on Wednesday. Play on Wednesday starts at 9 o’clock, and all players are reminded that non-attendance on time will make them liable to be scratched. WOMEN’S SINGLES First round: Miss D. Waters beat Miss R.
