OUTBOARD RACING
SUCCESSFUL MEETING AT PANMURE BASIN RESULTS OF EVENTS With the splendid weather conditions prevailing on Saturday afternoon, and ideal water conditions, the programme of events arranged by the outboard division of the New Zealand Power-boat Association could not fail to be successful. The faces were run at Panmure Basin, this being the second occasion that the suburban water has been utilised. At the previous meeting the weather was terrible, and there was a good deal of muddling among competitors and officials. On Saturday, however, there was a great improvement in the running of the races, and in the races as well, although one o.r two of the officials were a little too busy, and held up one event at least. The meeting was probably the most successful that has yet been held in Auckland, and the exceptionally large crowd followed the racing with strict attention. The handicapping was excellent, and the finishes were close and exciting, a factor which will play a big part in making the sport popular among speed enthusiasts. In one race there were 12 competitors, and 10 in another. When they all got going, it was difficult to decide which boat was in the lead, and this caused some confusion among the spectators. One was. the open handicap, and should have been run in heats. The other was a combined class event, which could have been left out of the programme, and heats and final of the open handicap substituted. There were two upsets, Zip turning turtle in the second event, and Ocean Mule capsizing in the third race. In both cases the drivers and the boats escaped injury. Throughout the afternoon the public was kept informed on the racing, and entertained by music broadcast by public address equipment operated bv Mr. Giles, of Otahuhu.
