A special excursion train to Hamilton made a record for the trip. Fifteen well-filled carriages left the city and there were more than 750 passengers after Drury was passed. Large crowds came on the inward train from Hamilton. About 450 persons were carried on a train from Glen Afton to Waihi and on to Mount Maunganui. All other transport services carried a vast volume of traffic. The vehicular ferries worked at top pressure to transport cars from the city side to the North Shore. All the bays of the Waitemata and the Manukau were densely crowded, and, on the Shore, Milford, Takapuna, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, Brown’s, Campbell's and Murray’s Beaches were thronged by bathers in multi-coloured attire. Bathers, boating men, trampers, or just plain excursionists—they were all abroad. _
